Show Notes

Self-Esteem vs. Self-Confidence
In this episode, I share 3 key findings explaining why focusing on confidence is critical in preparing your child for a positive school experience.

First, understand that self-esteem is literally how favorably a person regards him or herself. High self-esteem can mean confident and secure–but it can also mean conceited, arrogant, narcissistic, and egotistical. Believing in yourself is the premise to understanding self-esteem.

Self-confidence is believing in your ability. This approach takes on more of a growth mindset, a term coined by researcher Carol Dweck, which means that we value what we’re doing regardless of the outcome. We learn to thrive on challenge, and don't see failure as a way to describe ourselves but as a springboard for growth and developing our abilities. A growth mindset is an approach to life in which an individual believes that their talents, intelligence, and abilities can be motivating.

Find out what the correlation is between self-esteem and academic performance and why it may be more important to improve a child’s self-confidence if we want to see improvements in achievement.
