#067: Suicidal Ideation: Know the Warning Signs!
Show Notes

The purpose of this episode is to heighten your awareness about a very sensitive topic - one we really need to be more open to discussing. And it is suicide. I understand that you may feel uncomfortable talking about it, especially with your child, but there are ways to open up the dialogue and even build your relationship to the point where your child sees you as a safe adult to talk to about their feelings. Most importantly, my special guest and I will be sharing with you some of the signs you should look for if you suspect your child is contemplating suicide and how you can seek help.

Resources Mentioned In this Episode:

What are some of the signs that a youth is contemplating suicide? As parents it is important to focus on what you can See, Hear, Sense, and Learn.

See—careless, moody, withdrawing, alcohol/ drug misuse
Hear—alone, burden, no purpose, escape
Sense—desperate, hopeless, numb, ashamed
Learn—abuse, losses, rejection, suicide experience

What can parents do if they notice these signs? Ask, Listen, and Keep Safe
Ask-“Are you thinking about suicide?”
Listen—“Let’s talk about this.” “I’m listening.” “This is important.”
Keep Safe—“We need extra help. I want to connect you with someone who can help you keep safe.”

What protective factors need to be in place for suicide prevention?
Effective coping and problem-solving skills
Reasons for living
Support from partners, friends, and family
Feeling connected
Faith/ belief in something greater
Understanding that it’s okay not to feel okay
